The term "Gromaticus" primarily refers to a Roman land surveyor or agrimensor, derived from the Latin word "groma", a surveying instrument used to establish right angles and straight lines for land division, particularly in the Roman practice of centuriation. The name "Gromaticus" itself signifies a professional in this field, indicating someone who used the groma in their work, as shown in this artist's impression.
